The Happy Hunting Ground is the place where hunting is easy; the spirits of hunters go here after their death, if their life was deemed worthy. You did not qualify though, so you will not ever be able to find your way to the places where the hunter spirits and game are... and their hunting dogs will hunt you instead! You hope to use this to learn some skills in fighting in open hyperbolic space, though.
Hunting Dogs are monsters found in the Hunting Ground.
Generation[edit]
When the player has less than 10 Turquoises, each Turquoise is generated with two Hunting Dogs in the guarding state (see below) at distance 2 from it.
Collecting any Turquoise except the first, as well as any orb other than Orb of Safety and Dead Orb, triggers an ambush, with several dogs appearing at the edge of the player's sight range. The number of dogs depends on the number of Turquoises possessed by the player or the type of orb, as appropriate. See Hunting Ground for details.
When the player has at least 23 Turquoises, Hunting Dogs also appear as wandering spawns.
Properties[edit]
Like all basic monsters, Hunting Dogs can kill the player, and be killed by the player, in one hit.
Hunting Dogs have three states: normal, guarding and regrouping.
- Hunting Dogs in their normal state pursue the player just like a basic monster.
- Hunting Dogs in their guarding state do not move (but threaten cells adjacent to them, and so cannot be approached without specific Orb powers).
- Hunting Dogs in their regrouping state run away from the player (but can still attack if the player somehow gets close to them).
- Collecting a Turquoise alerts all guarding Dogs in distance 2 from it, switching them to their basic state.
- Note that this does not necessarily mean only the two guards the Turquoise was generated with --- if it so happens that there were more Dogs in the alert radius of the collected Turquoise, then they will wake up as well.
- Ambush dogs always start in their normal state.
- When the player has at least 5 Turquoises and manages to get away from an ambush, the remaining dogs in the ambush switch to their regrouping state.
- This is accompanied by the message '"The Hunting Dogs give up."'
