A nasty predator from the Icy Land. Contrary to other monsters, it tracks its prey by their heat.
Icewolves are temperature-sensitive terrestrial monsters native to the Icy Land and Eclectic City.
Properties[edit]
Unlike most other monsters, Icewolves do not directly target the Rogue - instead, they move towards the highest-temperature area. As the Rogue normally gives off body heat, they can still often be found by Icewolves, but there are several ways of fooling the wolves.
Icewolves do not leave temperature lands. If somehow one is forced out (e.g. using the Orb of Air), it will immediately attempt to return to the temperature land. If this is impossible, it will not move.
However, if an Icewolf enters the Volcanic Wasteland, they will become a Lava Wolf. This behavior is described in its flavor text, which notes that their love of heat causes them to "abandon their natural instincts". Likewise, if a Lava Wolf enters the Icy Land, then they become an Icewolf.
Icewolves always face the cell they will step on next turn.
Strategy[edit]
- There are several ways of distracting Icewolves so they don't target you. Examples:
- The Orb of Winter makes the Rogue very cold - often colder than the default temperature of the land - so Icewolves will move away. Note that Icewolves will still always attack if adjacent.
- Fire is of course extremely hot, usually far more than the Rogue is, so Icewolves will try to move near it. In the Icy Land, it is possible to create a Fire by using a Bonfire.
- Some monsters, such as Desert Men, have a naturally very high body temperature, so Icewolves will try to move near them if the former are in a temperature land (but will not attack them unless the Orb of Discord is active).
- Even just being in one place for some time and then moving may cause the place you formerly were to be warmer than your current location, allowing you to evade Icewolves.
- Icewolves can often get stuck behind Ice Walls - as long as the walls don't melt.
- Icewolves won't normally leave temperature lands, so escaping through a land boundary is a viable strategy if one is available.
- They often get stuck at land boundaries, which may be a problem if you are trying to re-enter a land they are native to, but usually you can just find another boundary.
