The Orb of Change is a ranged Orb native to Cocytus; it is unlocked there and in Hub Lands by collecting 10 Ice Sapphires, and globally by collecting 25 Ice Sapphires.

Effect[edit]

The Orb of Change is used on a monster, with a cost of 3 charges per activation. The monster is transformed into "a monster with no special properties", according to the in-game description; specifically, it is transformed into one of the following:

  • Yeti
  • Running Dog
  • Ranger
  • Giant Ape
  • Cultist
  • Falling Dog
  • Mutant
  • Familiar
  • Striped Dog
  • Giant Fox
  • False Princess
  • Yendorian Researcher
  • Narcissist

Each monster species is selected with probability proportional to the player's kill count of that species, except for the victim's original form (if it happened to be on the list above), which is never selected. The victim is stunned for one turn if it was not stunned already.

Because its new form is always a terrestrial monster, and it is stunned for that turn, if the monster is over cells like chasms or water, they will die the next turn.

Strategy[edit]

  • In this Orb's native Cocytus, the Orb can be used to kill both types of Sharks from a distance, acting much like Orb of the Mind but with a one-turn delay and at a fraction of the cost.
  • In other lands, especially ones with strong enemies such as Burial Grounds or Ruined City, the Orb can make crowds of monsters more manageable by removing the threat posed by tough or invincible monsters.
